The Lost History of Avalere

Once, long ago, through a mysterious door, mana poured into the world. With it came unbelievable miracles and marvelous wonders. This was called the Gift of Lyse – for the girl who first opened the door and forever changed the course of the world. Civilizations flourished with their new gift and the Golden Age of magick flourished.Yet, just as suddenly, it vanished. Greed devoured the minds of men, inebriated with power. In an enigmatic act, the Envoker sundered the door, closing off the Gift of Lyse and causing the lands to become parched of mana. The following Dark Ages consumed the continent as civilizations dependent on the gift collapsed into ruin. The survivors struggled to rebuild and it took centuries to settle into the current era of peace – Ataraxia. In that time, magick was all but forgotten, only whispered about in fear.Now, in the current year of Ataraxia 512, there are traces of magicks here and there – a flicker, a spark. Once more, the essence is slowly seeping back into the soil and flesh. Witches – those with the gift – are being born anew. The denizens of Avalere live in fear for the return of the magicks that once ruined them.

SUMMARY.Elias Elswood is a completely ordinary farmer living an ordinary life in the quiet but quaint little village of Wickton. At least he was ordinary until one day, the elderly villagers gifted him a small goat for all his help during the harvest seasons.. It was a small, blue goat. No one else seemed to think it was strange that this goat was blue, no matter how many times he tried to point it out. Without a choice, he took the small goat back with him.The next day, the goat had turned into a child with a shock of curling blue hair. It turned to him with deadpan eyes, saying but one word, “Hungry.”Since then, Elias’ ordinary life has become quite un-ordinary. Such as learning that his childhood friend Cerise has been a witch all along. Not only that but strange little creatures keep popping up around his farm. He becomes more and more entwined in the outbursts of magical occurrences. On top of everything, for some reason he keeps collecting new magical farm animals?!However, the more outrageously bizarre his life becomes, the more endangered they are from discovery by the Order of the Witch-Hunt.

Sinclairate Kingdom

Although named the Sinclairate Kingdom, it does not have a ruling monarch. Instead, the ruling party is a Regent descended from the Sinclaire Family. It is an open question as to why the family does not just become the ruling monarchy. Yet, tradition stands firmly amongst the Regency. The crest of the Sinclairate Kingdom is the Everflame.In Ataraxia 496, a witch-hunt decree was set forth by the Regent Regulus. The Order of the Witch-Hunt was founded to address the increasing number of witch-births within the Kingdom and the growing unease of the people. Under this decree, magical occurrences are subdued and witches are apprehended by a specialized faction of the Sinclairate Knighthood. The witches are brought to the capital and never heard from again.

Principality of Desmore

A sovereign state to the west and south of the Sinclairate Kingdom, across the Serpient's Strait. It is the oldest nation on Avalere, having persisted from before the Sundering. It’s known to be secretive and isolated, hardly interacting with its neighbors.A great wall spans the border of Desmore. The stone that the barrier is made of has a strange cerulean hue and legends say that the great Lapis Wyrm in its dying throes coiled its body to protect the nation he loved. Thus, the crest of Desmore is a great blue wyrm.

The Beowin Empire

A fiercely territorial nation to the west and north of the Sinclairate Kingdom. There is political tension between the two nations and in the past they have clashed over border disputes. Its heraldic crest is the Winged Lion.

The Ancient Civilization

An ancient civilization that thrived during the Golden Era and spanned across most of the continent during its prime. Though it's long been lost to history, its remnants are found scattered throughout the lands.Not much is known about the ancient civilization, but from the few records that have been recovered, it is thought that it was largely ruled by a court of magistrates. These magisters are both politicians and scholars of Lyse’s gift though not necessarily blessed with the gift themselves.

The Forgotten Realm

The Forgotten Realm is the blessed land thought to exist across the door from whence Lyse’s gift flows. Not much is known about it except for the words of the First Witch Lyse: “The most beautiful place in existence.” The doors to the realm have been sought after for the entirety of the Golden Era. Those who seek to unravel the mysteries of magick could only find the answers beyond the door. Yet, for all their efforts, the Forgotten Realm had never been found again... until the coming of the Envoker and his Seven.

Elias Elswood

Elias Elswood is a completely ordinary farmer living an ordinary life in the quiet but quaint little village of Glendale. That is until his life is completely disrupted by the arrival of a blue goat into his farm. He's been attracting all sorts of magical creatures to his farm ever since.

Cerise Flannery

Cerise is a long time childhood friend of Elias. For awhile, she pretended to be a mild and meek village girl to avoid standing out, but she's just naturally too strong-willed and has a penchant for running head first into trouble. She is secretly a witch though she has trouble controlling her fire.

Bluebell the Blue Goat

Bluebell is baby-blue goat who takes on the form of a small human child. He is terribly lazy and spends most of the day sleeping. Yet, this innocuous little goat is the direct root cause for all the chaos happening at Elswood Farm now!

Sorentine the Barn Owl

Sorentine is a barn owl with a great hunger for books and knowledge. He has tufts on his head reminiscent of a great horned owl but he will be quite miffed if you say so.

Mavis the Bull

Mavis is a strong and steadfast female bull. Though she is usually of mellow temperament, do not anger her. She can rage uncontrollable for days and will wreak havoc where she stampedes.

Mettie the Scarlet Sheep

Matilida, also nicknamed Mettie, is an unusual scarlet sheep. Clumsy and timid with a penchant for eating human hearts to the chagrin of Elias. He's slowly been conditioning her to eat pig hearts instead.

Poppy the Blue Goat

Poppy is Bluebell's younger sister. Her gift is not as developed so she cannot take on a full human form yet, but she is quite responsible and hard-working, unlike her older brother.

Archie the Rooster

They call him a rooster, but Archie is more of a cockatrice. He's quite friendly, though you'll have to watch out for the venomous bite of his tail. He likes to crow at god-awful times of the night instead of at daybreak like most roosters.

Primo the Shepherd Dog

Primo may not look like your typical sheep dog. For one, he's twice as tall and three times longer... but one cannot ask for a more loyal companion!

Vincent Sinclaire

The current reigning Regent of the Sinclairate Kingdom. He was known to be a philandering, irresponsible young man in his youth until he became smitten with the Head Arcanist. He is now a devoted husband and capable ruler.

Helenore Sinclaire

The Head Arcanist of the Arcanum and wife of the reigning Regent. She went by Helenore Pelagio before her marriage. Though she appears strict and severe, Helenore has a caring heart.

Lucine Sterling

Lucine is a witch-hunting knight under the Sinclairate, an extremely capable woman. She is, however, quite curt and stoic. As a result, a lot of her peers consider her hard to talk to.

Fiametta Hart

Fia is a travelling witch with a penchant for making potions. Cheerful, kind-hearted and extremely naïve, Fia stumbles into a lot of problems of her own making. One such incident included saving a certain witch-hunting knight against her better judgement.

The Astrologian

Not much is known about the Astrologian except that they are a quiet individual that keeps to themselves. They have the rare gift of divination and has been a part of the Arcanum for as long as anyone can remember.

The Archivist

The Archivist is one of the oldest members of the Arcanum along with the Astrologian. He studies the lost history before the Sundering, excavating old ruins, collecting artifacts, and recording oral traditions.

The Valrose

At first glance, the Valrose simply seems like a beautiful human boy, but the more one looks, the more unsettling his appearance. There is an air of unnatural, in-human perfection about him, as though molded with intention.

SUMMARY.In recent years, the Sinclairate Kingdom has been experiencing a sharp increase in magical incidents. As a member of the Knighthood, the Dame Lucine Sterling is responsible for quelling the arcane and its evil influence. This includes tracking down and apprehending those cursed with the touch of magick. A witch-hunter, she is often called.One day, the Dame is dispatched for an investigation into a curious farmhouse on the outskirts of the Sinclairate territory; however, on her journey there, she is severely wounded. Luckily, she is saved by a medicine girl living on the fringes of the Bayesian Forests. The girl seems quirky, and a little suspect, but mostly harmless…?A tale of how a witch and a witch-hunting knight fall in love.

SUMMARY.

In a world beloved by Lyse's gift of magic, a man seeks the door through which her blessing flows. Along the way, he befriends a homunculus, a pheasant, a goat, a barn owl, a bull, a lamb, and a star. A motley crew, they journey to the ends of the continent and eventually change the course of history forever.
